TOPIC: “A Culinary Journey to Feed the Soul”

By following your passion, working hard, and accepting challenges, every dream is possible. Barbara will share her story with the hope of inspiring others to follow their visions.

Barbara Pool Fenzl is a major figure on the American culinary stage. Her first love is teaching, but she is also a cookbook author, magazine writer, and television personality. In 1983, Barbara founded Les Gourmettes Cooking School in Phoenix, which offers demonstration classes taught by her, restaurant chefs, cookbook authors, and traveling teachers from across the country. Barbara also teaches at other schools around the U.S. and in Mexico, and for ten years she has taught in the Périgord region of southwestern France. Barbara was the host of a 13-week PBS television series, “Savor the Southwest,” which aired in 1999 in approximately ninety markets coast to coast, and for the past several years she has hosted cooking-related pledge drives (“A is for Appetizers,” “D is for Desserts,” and so on) on the Phoenix-area PBS station. Since 2004 she has been a regular guest on “Your Life A to Z,” a local morning television program. Barbara is the author of Southwest the Beautiful Cookbook (Collins San Francisco 1994), Savor the Southwest (Bay Books 1999), and Seasonal Southwest Cooking (Northland Publishing 2005) and was the food editor of Southwest Passages and Phoenix Home and Garden magazines. She also is a frequent contributor to Bon Appétit magazine and other national publications.

Barbara is a past president of the International Association of Culinary Professionals; benefactor and past board member of the American Institute of Wine and Food; past president of the Arizona Chapter of Les Dames d’Escoffier; and a past member of the James Beard Foundation Restaurant Awards Committee. She has been inducted into the Arizona Culinary Hall of Fame, received the Greater Phoenix Chef’s Association Humanitarian of the Year award, and the Junior League of Phoenix has named its kitchen in her honor. She received the Girl Scouts World of the Arts Award in 2002 and was named a 2003 Master of the Southwest by Phoenix Home and Garden Magazine. Barbara holds B.S. and M.A. degrees and has studied cooking at the Cordon Bleu (London), Ecole LeNotre, and Luberon College, and she has earned the title of “Certified Culinary Professional,” a peer-reviewed distinction awarded by the International Association of Culinary Professionals.

Learn about the seven dimensions of wellness and how you can begin to pursue a wellness way of living to achieve your optimal level of health. Understand how your physical well-being can be positively or negatively impacted by the other dimensions of wellness and five “first steps” along the path to wellness.

Ellen Owens-Summo, M.Ed., DTR is the Director of the Greater Valley Area Health Education Center. With a background in nutrition and wellness, Ellen is committed to health promotion and prevention activities and enjoys sharing this passion with future health professions students. Ellen is an amateur tri-athlete and enjoys cooking, hiking, art, and enjoying time with family and friends. Ellen holds a Masters degree in educational leadership from Northern Arizona University as well as undergraduate degree in nutrition from Ball State University in nutrition and dietetics. She is a member of the American Public Health Association, the National Wellness Institute, and serves on the board of the Arizona Public Health Association.

Lillian Coury is a combination of a successful business professional from NYC with a Cowgirl who is happiest on a horse. Lillian is a certified executive coach, workshop facilitator, speaker and founder of Pegasus Pathways. A caring and challenging breakthrough agent, Lillian’s clients enjoy greater confidence and growth in areas of personal productivity, personal power including clarifying vision, setting goals, developing risk tolerance, and balancing work and life demands. Lillian founded Pegasus Pathways 10 years ago, lives in Gold Canyon, AZ and works with clients across the country while competing with her Arabian Gelding Cassanova, a dream come true for this Brooklyn girl! She is an active member of the ICF (International Coach Federation), the Phoenix Rotary 100 Club, ASBA (Arizona Small Business Association), Referral Institute, and AEG (Arizona Excellence Group), and supports non-profits throughout the Valley.

Sharon Stinard has dedicated her life to the advancement of women and children. She began her professional career as a high school teacher and spent 21 years influencing her students to define their personal values, set goals and develop decision making skills. After moving to Arizona in 1990 she created and directed two grant programs, Women in New Directions and Women in Technology, for Central Arizona College. These programs provided personal counseling and academic advising to economically disadvantaged women of all ages who wanted to obtain a college education and maximize their talents. During the life of these grant programs over $400,000 was distributed to women to assist them in achieving their educational goals to become well-paid professionals and role models for their children.

Sharon is the founder and current Board President of the Community Alliance Family Abuse (CAAFA) that serves the communities of Northern Pinal County. Under her leadership the organization now employs a staff of 10 to assist families in crisis. In 2000, CAAFA built a 16-bed safe home for women and children. Sharon is also founder and a board member of the Superstition Area Cultural Alliance that promotes art, culture and economical development in Northern Pinal County. She is past board president of the Superstition Mountain Rotary Club, Superstition Mountain Mental Health Agency and the Volunteer Center of Pinal County. As a past member of the Apache Junction Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, Sharon is a recipient of the Lake Award for Contributions to the Chamber and the Community. She is also the recipient of the 2008 Presidential Award for Volunteer Service and a 2009 recipient of the St. Luke’s Foundation Hon Kachina Award. Sharon holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business from Minot State University and a Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Dayton. She resides in Mesa with her husband, Roger.
